Welcome!
My name is Emma Martin, and I'm a University of Central Florida alumni that graduated with my B.S. in Psychology, with a focus in Neuroscience. I am currently working as a full-time clinical research assistant at UF Health's Florida Recovery Center. In my spare time, I also work part-time as a substance abuse technician.
During my undergraduate, I held a manager position at Knights of Refugee Medical Relief to relieve gaps in health care and provide public health outreach. In the Orlando community, I volunteered alongside UCF's Neuroscience Alliance and managed the National and Regional Brain Bee. It was my responsibility to tutor high-school students and create the test for Regionals. I was also able to attend the Society for Neuroscience's 2024 conference under this organization!
Research
My passion for psychology and neuroscience comes from my experience working with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), addiction, and adverse childhood experiences (ACE) which impact the persistence of behaviors that are exhibited today. I am especially interested in impactful intervention methods, substance abuse rehabilitation, and risk-reduction programs. I also like understanding the neurobiology underlying decision-making, compulsion, and reward circuits, as they relate to addiction behaviors. I would like to continue this research into my graduate degree.
My current research explores addiction's impact on cognitive recovery. I am working with Dr. Ben Lewis at the University of Florida, where I recently presented our project on the healthcare patient community at the Florida Recovery Center. We are in the works of drafting a manuscript of the findings!
In my undergraduate, I was a Research Assistant (RA) at UCF's REALE-Time Lab. This psychology lab focuses on substance abuse and behaviors that society should consider when reducing alcohol intake. While it primarily focused on university students, I was hoping to generalize participation outwards. During my time at UCF, I was also accepted as a McNair Scholar and under a Fullbright Scholarship!

Study Abroad Program lead by UCF Professors
Historical Contributions to Medicine
in Austria & Germany
In 2023, I was able to experience the trip of a lifetime! It was an illuminating experience to expose myself to how medicine has advanced throughout time, and it is especially important to understand how our past impacts current medicinal practices. The study abroad also counted for a course credit, which means, with the help of my professor Dr. Hawthorne and Dr. Chiarelli, I was able to learn this history beyond the experience of European museums.
